Alfred the Great
A fanfiction by user “fumifumi”.
Alfred the Great was the king of Wessex, a kingdom in Anglo-Saxon England during the late 9th century. He was a strong and noble leader, loved by his people for his wisdom, courage, and compassion. However, his kingdom was constantly under threat from the invading Danish Vikings, who sought to conquer and pillage their lands.
Despite the challenges he faced, King Alfred remained steadfast in his faith and his commitment to protecting his people. He prayed to the Lord for guidance and strength, and he trusted in His divine providence to see them through.
One day, a group of Danish warriors led by the notorious Viking chieftain, Guthrum, launched a surprise attack on Wessex. King Alfred and his army fought bravely, but they were vastly outnumbered and outmatched. The battle was fierce, and many lives were lost on both sides.
As the fighting raged on, King Alfred stood firm, his eyes fixed on the enemy before him. He raised his sword high and shouted, “Who are you looking for?”
The Danes were taken aback by the king’s boldness, and they hesitated for a moment. Guthrum stepped forward, his eyes cold and hard, and replied, “We are looking for your head, King Alfred. We will not rest until we have it.”
King Alfred stood his ground, his heart pounding in his chest. He knew that this battle was not just about him or his kingdom, but about something greater. He remembered the words of the prophet Isaiah, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
With renewed courage, King Alfred raised his sword again and shouted, “In the name of the Lord, I will not surrender! We will fight to the last man, if need be, but we will not give up our freedom or our faith!”
The battle raged on for hours, with neither side gaining the upper hand. The Danes fought with ferocity, but King Alfred and his warriors fought with a determination born of their love for their God and their land.
Finally, as the sun began to set and the battle neared its end, King Alfred saw an opportunity. He rallied his troops and launched a final, decisive attack on the enemy’s flank. The Danes were caught off guard, and many of their warriors were slain.
Guthrum, however, managed to escape, and King Alfred knew that the threat to his kingdom was not yet over. He knelt down and prayed, thanking the Lord for His mercy and asking for His guidance in the days to come.
As he rose to his feet, King Alfred knew that there would be more battles to fight, more challenges to overcome. But he also knew that he was not alone, that the Lord was with him always, and that as long as he stayed true to his faith and his calling as a leader, he would prevail.
And so, with a heart full of courage and a soul full of faith, King Alfred the Great stood ready to face whatever trials lay ahead, knowing that he would never give up, never surrender, and never lose hope.
