“Tides of Change” (2013) by Lily

Originally published on LiVEJOURNAL and deleted since, this fanfiction explores the intersection of race and love within mermaid communities. It delves into the complexities of interracial relationships, experiences of marginalization, and the negotiation of cultural identities within the mermaid realm.

Once upon a time, in a hidden cave near the sparkling sea, I, Lily, a 12-year-old mermaid, lived in a magical world with mermaids of all races. Our tails shimmered with brilliant colors as we swam through the waves, exploring the secret wonders of the cave.

One sunny day, as I was swimming near the glowing corals, I spotted Maya, a mermaid with scales that changed color like a beautiful kaleidoscope. I swam up to her, my heart racing with excitement. “Hi there! I’m Lily! What’s your name?” I asked, unable to contain my curiosity.

Maya smiled warmly and replied, “I’m Maya. It’s so nice to meet you, Lily!” Her voice was as gentle as the ocean breeze, and I instantly knew we were going to be great friends.

We spent our days exploring together, discovering hidden treasures and playing games of tag among the seaweed. Maya taught me about her culture and the traditions of her race, and I shared stories of my own. We laughed and splashed, creating memories that would last a lifetime.

But sometimes, our friendship faced challenges. Some mermaids didn’t understand why we were friends, and they would say mean things behind our backs. One day, we overheard them whispering, “Why are they friends? They’re so different!”

Instead of getting upset, Maya and I looked at each other with determination. We knew we had to show them the power of friendship, no matter our differences. So we decided to invite all the mermaids to a special gathering in the hidden cave.

As the mermaids arrived, Maya and I welcomed them with open arms. “Come join us! Let’s celebrate friendship and unity!” I shouted with excitement, my voice echoing through the cave.

Everyone gathered around, their eyes filled with curiosity. Maya and I swam to the center and began to dance, our tails swishing in harmony. “We may look different, but our hearts beat the same,” Maya declared, her voice strong and confident.

The other mermaids watched in awe as Maya and I moved gracefully through the water. It was a sight they had never seen before – friendship and love shining brightly.

Inspired by our dance, the other mermaids joined in, their laughter and voices filling the cave. “We’re all unique, and that’s what makes us special!” I exclaimed, my voice ringing out with joy.

From that day forward, the secret cave near the sea became a place of unity and acceptance. Mermaids of all races came together, forming friendships and celebrating our differences. We laughed, we danced, and we created a world where love knew no boundaries.

The legend of Lily and Maya’s friendship spread throughout the mermaid community, reminding everyone that unity and acceptance were the true treasures of the sea. And as I swam through the waves, I knew that even in the depths of the ocean, our friendship would continue to inspire others, just as it had inspired me.

So, with a heart full of happiness, I continued to explore the hidden wonders of the sea, knowing that the tides of change had brought me a friendship that would last a lifetime.
