The Art of Autism

The Art of Autism is an ongoing artistic research project that explores the lived experience of neurodivergence through a diverse visual vocabulary, including collage, photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, and even Ministeck. Rooted in the first-person perspective of an autistic artist–researcher, the work examines how sensory perception, emotion, and cognitive difference can be expressed beyond the limits of verbal discourse, opening up non-linguistic forms of knowing and feeling. The project has been presented in a variety of community and cultural spaces — notably at ZIMIHC theatre Stefanus, Cum Cura, Bibliotheek Neude, and Lister Gebiedsteam & Wooncomplex Waalstraat in Utrecht — thereby situating autistic creativity within public and everyday contexts. The Art of Autism has also gained recognition in both scholarly and popular media, being featured in Transformative Works & Cultures, Dagblad Utrecht, and on RTV Utrecht, reflecting its significance at the intersection of artistic practice, neurodiversity studies, and public engagement. By reframing autistic aesthetics as a mode of critical inquiry, the project contributes to broader conversations about the epistemic value of neurodivergent perspectives in art and culture.
