Inside the Autside

A Misfit Manifesto

Inside the Autside is my first monograph and the book that set everything in motion. Published in 2023 and later released in a revised hardcover edition, it became a bestseller within autistic and neurodivergent communities, and has since been used in educational, therapeutic, and peer-support contexts.

Written as an auti-ethnography, Inside the Autside explores autism from the inside out. Rather than presenting autism as a clinical object of study, the book foregrounds lived experience as a legitimate source of knowledge. It examines how autistic identity is shaped not only by neurological difference, but by continuous interaction with a neurotypical norm that defines, disciplines, and often marginalises difference.

At the core of the book lies a simple but far-reaching claim: autism is not a defect or deviation, but a natural variant within the human species. The difficulties autistic people encounter are therefore not intrinsic failures, but the result of misfitting in environments designed for the majority. Drawing on philosophy, psychology, cultural theory, and personal narrative, Inside the Autside reframes autism as a matter of minority versus majority — and as a political, epistemological, and ethical issue.

The book is structured around five thematic layers: misfitting, special interests, doing social, porosity, and worldview. Together, these chapters trace how neurotypical norms shape ideas about intelligence, sociality, productivity, sensitivity, and morality, while systematically devaluing autistic ways of being. Special interests are reclaimed as sources of meaning and expertise rather than symptoms to be curtailed; sensory sensitivity is explored as porosity rather than weakness; and autistic worldviews are presented as offering urgently needed perspectives on care, ecology, and responsibility.

Importantly, Inside the Autside does not seek accommodation through assimilation. It resists deficit-based language, challenges DSM-centred framings of autism, and questions who gets to define what counts as “normal”, “functional”, or “human”. By placing autobiographical fragments alongside critical analysis, the book deliberately disrupts traditional hierarchies between researcher and subject, theory and experience.

While deeply personal, Inside the Autside is not a memoir written for inspiration or consumption. It is a manifesto in the literal sense: a public declaration that calls for a rethinking of autism, identity, and difference. It speaks to autistic readers seeking recognition, to professionals willing to question their frameworks, and to allies who want to understand what it means to listen without translating everything back into familiar terms.

Inside the Autside argues that neurodiversity is not a problem to be solved, but a form of human richness that challenges us to imagine more just, attentive, and plural ways of living together.

  1. Beste Martine,
    Nienke Willemsen
