Current Academic Research Projects

Next to my artistic research, I am also involved in academic research. On this page, you can read more about my current academic research projects. I mainly focus on three themes – the Cyborg Mermaid, Inside the Autside, and #KingAlfred – but also dabble in related subjects. As an academic, my keywords are autism, cyborgs, fanart, games, languages, medievalism, mermaids, music(ology), (neuro)psychology.

The Cyborg Mermaid

As a PhD student at the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands, I am writing my thesis about the Cyborg Mermaid, or to be more concrete: about the ways modern media empower people to create new stories based on mermaid mythology. What fascinates me most about the study of fantastic beings is that the way in which we shape them tells us so much about what it means to be human. If you like, you can check some selected publications and selected paper presentations connected to this idea.

Inside the Autside

Next to that, I am working on a monograph of what I call my ‘autiethnography’ – a scholarly & scientific work on autism, that combines my own experiences with my studies in neuropsychology at the University of Chicago (e-learning). Click here to read more about this.

#KingAlfred

A third project I am very passionate about bears the working title #KingAlfred . It is about the representation of Alfred of Wessex in 21st century media, such as series, games and fan art. Click here to read more about this project.

& random nerdiness

Besides these large projects, I also work on standalone articles and blogs on subjects that interest me. Moreover, I like to work together with other scholars. If you like to read more, you can check out some of my publications via AcademiaGoogle Scholar and Research Gate.

Currently, I am also working on two academic publications for Japan Fans,
Japanese Arts & Culture from the Centre of Utrecht.
