The Zombie Mermaid

Pakistani author Rida wrote this two-part story about a zombie mermaid.

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, a mysterious oceanic kingdom of mermaids was living for so long, disconnected from mankind. They had made sure to hide their existence from the human world and so far, they were successful in doing that. Until one day, a ship came into their territory out of nowhere. It was a private ship with few people on it. It seemed like they were in search of something in the ocean. Some of them were looking at the sea through binoculars while two men were holding some kind of gun. The mermaids got an alert from the weird sound produced by the ship. All of them were signaling each other of a visible threat and trying to dive deep into the ocean. Suddenly one of the men fired his gun throwing a net trap in a certain direction. Something got trapped in the net. They pulled it up and soon a beautiful face appeared from the watery net. It truly was a mermaid with the upper body of a beautiful-looking girl with long blond hair and a scaly lower body of blue color shining brightly ending with a fish-like tail. “Dr. Hans, look what we’ve found.” One of the men shouted. Dr. Hans was a mad psychopath doctor, who was in his 60s and obsessed with the idea of creating a hybrid creature out of a mermaid who could live like humans without water. He was a former university professor with a specialization in marine life and had presented this idea before the university board many times but he got rejected every time as nobody believed in the existence of those aquatic humanoids. But he was certain of it as he grew up listening to mermaid stories from his grandpa who had done plenty of research on it and wrote down every single detail in his journal. Dr. Hans’s eyes were wide open to see a beautiful mermaid in front of his eyes. He was beaming with excitement. He gestured at the men and they put her in a water tank they had on the ship. Her name was Sara. she was a beautiful young mermaid who loves to explore the ocean depths. Today, she was far away from her home, wandering alone when she got caught in a trap by the humans. She was scared and nervous. The Little mermaid tried, again and again, in every way to free herself from the net but everything seemed useless. She didn’t know what to do. She had never seen anything like this not even humans. She started to scream in her specific tone but before she could signal anyone for help, she was attacked by a drugged dart and fainted in no time.

When Sara opened her eyes again, she was in a capsuled shape glass tank, half filled with water, enough to cover her lower scaly body with a shiny blue tail. She tried to gather herself. It was a big white hall with strong fluorescent lights beaming on top making her feel sick. Her head was feeling heavy and her sight was still blurry. She tried to look around to find any escape but that capsule was fully sealed. She had never been away from her family and now she was in a totally different world with things and creatures she had never seen before. She was losing hope. She didn’t know where she was or how to get back to her world. Anxiety washes over her whole body. A steady stream of tears started to flow down her cheeks as soon as it appeared to her that she can never go back home again. She was fully trapped in a prison which was a mysterious scary place. There were rats-like creatures laying in a tray on her left side, fully covered with blood. That scene scared the hell out of her.
Doctor Hans took her to an abandoned hospital outside the city which he had been using as his secret lab for different experiments on marine animals. There were a lot of different kinds of fish enclosed in a separate capsule. Some fish seems dead as they were motionless while some were laying in the capsules without water. Some of them seemed different as they had been a victim of his crazy experiments and turned into monstrous creatures. It seemed like he has been doing experiments on them for so long. After some time, the doctor came in. His smile was devilish. He said something to Sara that she was obviously not able to understand. Then he injected something in the water. After some time, Sara started to faint. She fell down eventually and was completely motionless. It seemed like she was dead but she was breathing. The doctor kept on attempting his failed experiments on Sara for months. Now the water inside the tank had turned pitch black. Her appearance had also changed. She no longer looked like a mermaid but a monster. She was now tied up with two large chains. When the doctor injected another portion he made, in the water she started to contort her body. She seemed to be in so much pain. While growling furiously she was moving violently. This reaction was totally opposite of what the doctor had thought of. He started to scream in anger. It was like his experiment had failed once again. A couple of minutes later, she managed to free herself from the chains. Her strength had drastically increased. She had become absolutely insane. she began punching her head violently into the glass wall. Her skin was turning green. Her eye color changed to dark red, her gills started to grow bigger with pointed ends, and her body was transforming in front of his eyes. Her teeth were growing sharper Just like any hungry shark. She looked immensely powerful. The doctor got a bit scared by the scene. He rushed towards the table to grab some medicine to faint her but unfortunately, it was too late. She slammed her tail against the glass and break it into pieces. She jumped on him while touring up his left arm followed by a second attack on his neck with her sharp teeth and started to eat him. The doctor was crying with pain and in no time, he was dead. Blood was gushing out of his arteries. His experiment was successful to some extent. He had created a hybrid Mermaid, but with a horrible exception. This mermaid had become something else, something more powerful and greedy of blood, and flesh. She had turned into some kind of zombie mermaid. Sara then moved out of that room leaving him dead on the floor. Her movement had become exceptionally fast. Even without having legs, she was swift in crawling with the help of her tail. As she got outside, she found a sewer pipe. She removed the manual cover and jumped into it. After twenty minutes of swimming, she made it to the sea. Sara was now a fully formed zombie mermaid, roaming the ocean depths, seeking to satisfy her never-ending hunger.
