Rain hung like a thin curtain over Gleawecestre when Alfred, \u00c6thelfl\u00e6d, and Gisla pushed through the heavy doors. Across the long table, Rollo waited, posture rigid. He didn\u2019t look up. His shoulders said enough: he knew exactly how high the stakes were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alfred sat without fuss. \u201cLet\u2019s get started.\u201d Voice measured. Sharp. Rollo nodded just enough. No fluff, no greetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental scoreboard:<\/em> Rollo\u2014cautious. \u00c6thelfl\u00e6d\u2014calculating. Gisla\u2014flinty. Me\u2014need everyone to play their piece without screwing the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c6thelfl\u00e6d rolled out the map of Mercia, corners weighted with bronze. \u201cThe Danes are massing along the Severn. Two fronts: London and here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rollo will push for recognition. Gisla wants land. I can use the Danes as leverage to force compliance. Keep it tight.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gisla\u2019s eyes flicked to Rollo. Quick, appraising. \u201cYour guys move fast. We need delay. You need land and pay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rollo smirked. \u201cAnd how do I know you won\u2019t stab me once the threat\u2019s gone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alfred slid the parchment across the table: a preliminary agreement. Borders respected. Annual silver\u2014but only if Rollo guards the crossings and breaks enemy supply lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rollo crossed his arms. \u201cSo my men are the shield. Yours hold back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly the leverage I need. Force him to commit. Then we move on our terms.<\/em> Alfred didn\u2019t say it. He never said it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want you to do what you do best,\u201d \u00c6thelfl\u00e6d said. \u201cHit fast. Create chaos. Break supply. We move only when you force them to redeploy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGlory,\u201d Gisla added. \u201cAnd land none of us can touch without your say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence. Pure calculation. Power pressed against power. Rollo\u2019s eyes traced the map, troop paths, lands Wessex and Mercia were willing to let go. Slowly: nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scoreboard update:<\/em> tentative yes. He\u2019s buying in. \u00c6thelfl\u00e6d\u2014steady. Gisla\u2014curious but contained. My move: lock timing, push simultaneity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWorks,\u201d Rollo said. \u201cTwo things: my authority there, and control of river crossings while the treaty lasts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alfred glanced at \u00c6thelfl\u00e6d and Gisla. Check. They see the same board. Good.<\/em> \u201cFine. But we attack together. No delays.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rollo extended a hand. Alfred took it, firm, no warmth. No friendship. Just structure. Mutual benefit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mental note:<\/em> He respects structure more than sentiment. Advantage for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c6thelfl\u00e6d rolled the map. \u201cDawn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gisla blew out the candles. \u201cIf it fails\u2026 at least it was smart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rollo grinned\u2014not friendly, not warm. \u201cWon\u2019t fail. I don\u2019t play to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scoreboard locked:<\/em> alliance formed, contingencies noted, leverage distributed. Trust? Not needed. Efficiency? Maximum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They left the hall, tied together by nothing but fragile mutual advantage. Alliance only holds as long as everyone gets what they want\u2014or needs. Alfred\u2019s alterego lingered behind, scanning, calculating, already anticipating the next move, the next betrayal, the next shift in the invisible lines of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s fine. That\u2019s the game. Keep moving pieces, keep eyes open. No one wins from sentimental attachment. Only from sharp moves and timing. And timing? Always in my control.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
