{"id":4139,"date":"2023-10-01T20:41:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T20:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/martinemussies.nl\/web\/?p=4139"},"modified":"2025-11-18T20:53:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T20:53:10","slug":"exhibiting-three-works-at-the-haiku-ontmoetingsdag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/martinemussies.nl\/web\/exhibiting-three-works-at-the-haiku-ontmoetingsdag\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhibiting Three Works at the Haiku Ontmoetingsdag"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>At the forthcoming <em><a href=\"https:\/\/haikuontmoetingsdag.nl\/\">Haiku Ontmoetingsdag<\/a><\/em> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibliotheekutrecht.nl\/klantenservice\/vestigingen-openingstijden\/vestiging.696013.html\/bibliotheek-neude\/\">Bibliotheek Neude<\/a> &#8211; an event co-organised with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japanfans.nl\">Japan Fans<\/a> &#8211; I will present three contrasting pieces that reflect my ongoing exploration of Japanese aesthetics, material culture, and embodied knowledge. Though formally distinct, they share a preoccupation with attentiveness, fragility, and the traces of lived experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first is a wabi-sabi\u2013inflected narrative centred on origami, conveyed through stills drawn from a contemplative video work. It approaches impermanence not as diminishment, but as an invitation to notice how beauty gathers in the incomplete and the passing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second piece, a modest work of mail art depicting two sparrows, considers correspondence as a quiet relational act: a way of sending presence across distance, holding open the possibility of connection within everyday rhythms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third is a cyanotype blueprint of a <em>hoj\u014djutsu<\/em> knot positioned over my <em>hakama<\/em>. Its deep blues and sun-drawn contours bind together body, discipline, and craft, while also signalling my interest in the intersections between martial arts, visual culture, and contemplative practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside these works, I will offer two short presentations on my music, including the premiere of a new composition for cello. These sessions will introduce aspects of my artistic research in sound\u2014how I navigate texture, restraint, and emotional clarity\u2014and how this intersects with my wider commitment to cross-cultural and interdisciplinary inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ningyo - cello &amp; sea sounds\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Sfbe7OIXNmc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, the artworks and musical contributions align with my broader practice: weaving creative research, cultural engagement, and neurodivergent ways of perceiving into experiences that invite reflection, curiosity, and delight.
