For my research about the historical reimagining of Alfred the Great, I am currently looking at fan fiction about The Last Kingdom<\/em>, that includes one (or more) of the Alfredian (Anglo-Saxon \/ Old-English) psalm translations. The following story was written by by Cheyenne and republished with permission of the author.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

If Hild had to label the one thing in the world she wasn\u2019t fond of, it was staring. People staring at her<\/em>, to be specific. Maybe she was a little paranoid, but Hild could have sworn that every time she stepped out with Emma that people knew. They knew what they did when they were alone together, they knew what thoughts stayed planted in Hild\u2019s head, they knew that Hild often wanted nothing more than to lay in bed with Emma in her arms. Maybe she was crazy, maybe none of them even cared (deep down she knew they very much cared, though), but it was hard to get their eyes off of her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cIt\u2019s easy to tell when you\u2019re deep in thought,\u201d a voice said from behind her. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Hild felt her breath catch in her throat at the sound of King Alfred\u2019s voice. She turned around to send him an unsure smile, leaning against the tree next to her to keep herself steady. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cThat\u2019s no good,\u201d she let out softly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            He chuckled. \u201cIt\u2019s not, no. I can read your feelings on your face\u2026 but it\u2019s nothing to be ashamed of. You should know that.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cWell, I\u2019m not really ashamed of people being able to see right through me\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cThat\u2019s not what I was talking about.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cOh,\u201d Hild frowned, placing her hands behind her back. \u201cWhat are you talking about then?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            King Alfred let out a little sigh and joined Hild by the tree, pressing his shoulder against it so he could look down at her. \u201cWhat you\u2019re feeling. Deep inside? That\u2019s not something I want you to ever doubt. I don\u2019t want you to ever think that what you\u2019re feeling isn\u2019t as worthy. Or as strong. All love is burning. All<\/em>love.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            A hint of redness ran through Hild\u2019s cheeks at the King\u2019s words. He knew about her and Emma, that much was obvious, but she didn\u2019t realise he knew that<\/em>much. That her feelings were written that clearly on her face. Shame hit her as she bit her lip, distracting herself by staring down at the grass and little river by them. The rushing of the water soothed her for a little, like the liquid was cooling her down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cFor him it is as for the tree, that is planted near streams of water, that yields its fruits at the appropriate season, and its leaves and its blades neither yellow nor wither,\u201d the King said softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cI\u2019m sorry?\u201d Hild prompted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cWhat makes you think that it isn\u2019t the same for you? That your love isn\u2019t as firm as that tree by the water, that your love won\u2019t grow like the leaves in the branches, that your love isn\u2019t like the never-ending stream of a river? What makes you think that what you have isn\u2019t exactly the same as what a man and a woman have? Is there a part of you that thinks your love for that woman isn\u2019t as strong, isn\u2019t as powerful? That it doesn\u2019t bear the same fire a man has for his wife, or the other way around?\u201d King Alfred wondered softly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cI\u2026 I\u2026\u201d Hild stuttered out. She hadn\u2019t expected such eye-opening words from the King. \u201cIt\u2019s not that I don\u2019t think that, it\u2019s just that\u2026 other people\u2026 sometimes\u2026\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            King Alfred shot her a small smile. \u201cThey just don\u2019t understand?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Hild nodded. \u201cYes. And sometimes when I see the way they look at me, the way their eyes graze over my body\u2026 I think I see disgust. Maybe even hatred. And just\u2026 a lack of understanding. I don\u2019t understand what it is that offends them so much. Why me holding hands with a woman causes such a rage in them…\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Leaning against the tree with crossed arms, the King nodded. \u201cWell, all I can say is to pay them no mind. Perhaps they\u2019re jealous you\u2019ve found a love so pure and honest? A love so strong?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            A snort left Hild\u2019s mouth as she stared at King Alfred. \u201cJealous? Of what? Of a love they don\u2019t even want to look at?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cNo, no, no,\u201d King Alfred said louder, his voice much more serious. \u201cJust like I said. \u2018For him it is as for the tree, that is planted near streams of water, that yields its fruits at the appropriate season, and its leaves and its blades neither yellow nor wither\u2019. A tree near water will surely never see an end. It\u2019ll have so much nourishment, so much strength. The leaves will grow green and beautiful and radiant, and what will those leaves do? Shelter the tree. They\u2019ll provide warmth, comfort\u2026 just like your Emma,\u201d the King laughed. \u201cShe\u2019ll be just as strong as the tree, and so will you, and so will your love. And the fruits? The tree provides even more nourishment, and with that nourishment comes strength again, and I know for a fact that\u2019s what you and Emma give to each other.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Hild felt her heart skip a beat as she stared at King Alfred. His words were ridiculously comforting and she found herself getting lost in them, wanting to hear more, needing more of his kind sentiments. \u201cAnd what else?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \u201cAnd what else?\u201d he micked with a deep chuckle. \u201cAnd you and your Emma will not have to deal with the idea of withering: of a love that fades away. Man and woman have come together many a time. Some of them take love for granted, but I don\u2019t see that with you two, oh no. Your love is strong. Your love is like the tree by the water. It grows bigger and taller every day, and one day it might loom over all of us, over the entire kingdom\u2026 And we\u2019ll get to see a love that survives harsh winters. A love like that couldn\u2019t be anything other than pure. It\u2019s rich and lively and real, Hild. Don\u2019t ever forget that. Don\u2019t let people think your heart is in the wrong hands. It\u2019s in the right pair, and I can assure you that it\u2019s just as worthy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

            A sigh left Hild\u2019s mouth before a smile graced her face, her eyes bright as she stared at the King. His shimmery eyes forced a little laugh out of her, her head shaking as she truly took in his words. He was right. They were wrong. But most importantly, her love was right<\/em>. There wasn\u2019t a single unworthy thing about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
